tournaments attracted 15 competing countries.
In his opening "Singles" match Matthew cruised through a 21-8, 21-19 win over Jan Sliva; Matthew
was beaten in his next match 21-14, 17-21, 21-18 to a very "on form" Tej Kolar. In his “Men's
Doubles" match, pairing with Jan Sliva, gained a 12-21, 21-18, 21-17 win. In his fourth game he chalked
up his third win of 21-7, 21-5 over Fran Pipunic of Croatia to collect 6 points from a maximum of 8.
In his fifth match Matthew, partnered with Veronika Dobiasova, triumphed in a 21-18, 21-14 straight
win, but suffered a defeat of 14-21, 21-14, 10-21 in his sixth "Men's Doubles" match against
Slovanian duo Tej Kolar/Ian Spitner. In his seventh “Mixed Doubles" match, pairing again with
Veronika Dobiasova, he notched up two more points winning the game 21-17, 21-10. In their eighth
and final encounter they were defeated 21-16. 21-13 to Rouglioss/Rougliou of Greece.
Abela, rated as one of the top junior players in the local circuit, came onto the game of Badminton at
the tender age of 6. In the 2005/2006 season he enrolled as a member of the Paola Badminton Club.
Under his mentors Kenneth Vella and Joanne Cassar, two established badminton players, Matthew was
given the boost and the self-confidence that he needed; his techniques improved in leaps and bounds
Matthew's calm personality excels on the court. His speed and agility are two of the ingredients that
makes him a popular sporting figure; a future player to emerge as a real contender, capable of offering
a solid challenge to most seasoned local players.
The son of Edmond Abela, a leading figure in the local badminton scene, Matthew's ambition is to
become Malta's National Champion and eventually to appear on the ranking list as an established
world class player.
Matthew succeeded in scooping every title in the book. In the 2009/2010 season he clinched his first
“Under 13 National Championship" title. He continued with his winning spree to add to his collection of
successes including the "Doubles", "Singles" and "Mixed". In the last two seasons Matthew notched the
"Triple Crown" title. A full time student, Matthew is currently reading for a degree in Physical Education
